I like the crack suppressant method. Put down something that has some give to it.

I hear what you're saying about bracing up the subflooring between the joists and I suspect that the seam doesn't fall on a joist to begin with. If that's the case then your idea will do the trick. But it will be a pain screwing down the floor into the new bracing.

Mind you he is selling the house and just replacing the cracked tiles.

Now I know why I went with Armstrong solarium instead of tile in our kitchen. 15 years later and a little wax and it looks brand new.
