I read that grim article when it came out. Malls are in a death spiral. Old enclosed malls are unsustainable. Mall operators won't be able to borrow money. Mall REITs are dropping. How many mall-located gyms do we need! Compounding the probably is the fact that many enclosed malls slapped up in the 70s and 80s were cheaply built; they deteriorate quickly without a lot of roof maintenance.

Board up a mall and ten years later it HAS to be torn down. The only plus is that almost all are well located.

The death spiral extends to the towns they're in. Towns that got most of their revenue from the mall's sales tax collection.
