Profitability matters. Companies that don't make money can go dark much faster. Or go private. All sorts of nasty things can happen to an already depressed sector.
But you're right, lots of cash is no guarantee either. Especially if they have VIE's.
Obviously we didn't get lucky with CCCL either. So far. Quite a disappointment because it is one of a few left with great potential.
