#148388 RE: ssami #148374

So where did Intel start shipping 14nm and what is Samsung shipping 10nm. In your opinion 2017 == 2015

Don't get your point. At the moment, Samsung presumably has the densest process in production. I think this is the first time for Intel since decades that they, at least for a short time, lost their process lead to another company. They may regain it with their own 10nm process but I doubt it will be such a big lead as they tend to claim. Intel said a lot in recent years, which in the end turned out to be mostly without substance. I simply don't trust their management anymore.

Actual density on chip depends on a lot of other things anyway. From synthesis, cell library, SRAM macros up to layout, the toolchain and IP is very important. I'd even challenge that this may be more important these days than some slightly different pitch values. In the end, it's a combination of a lot of things and AMD together with Samsung/Globalfoundries 14nm tech seem to have achieved some impressive results. If that actually holds true for most of AMDs coming processors, Intel is in deep trouble since they can't just compete in price anymore. AMD hasn't been in such a comfortable position for a long time.
