I disagree with you. While Jobs, Musk are technical people, it's not what made/makes them outstanding leaders of their respective organizations.
Also, you're focusing on something Cargile did 30 years ago (school) but you fail to recognize what he's done to his organization, Newport Corp.(mind you, one with a heavy technical bias) within the last few years.

If they want to take a company in acertain direction, they don't have to wait for the bean counters....
It also helps if they are a major shareholder....
