You can add extra monitors to just one of your machines, up to six extra monitors (on the cheap!).

Using USB adapters ($40-$50 for each extra monitor) and a USB port splitter (if you need it -- $10 for a 1 to 6 splitter)
you can operate the extra monitors along with the laptop's screen.
This does not require any internal modifications to your current machine (they are plug-and-play).

USB monitor adapters work for any monitor size, so if you have some old stand alone screens from previous desktops
you can hook them up to your current machine...You can have various screen resolutions operating along with the laptop's screen.
You can set up a complete monitor array for the home.

Except that still presents a port-ability issue when traveling...
I've see some neat multi-screen laptops that have 3 monitors that fold out for on the road use.
Though they are pretty expensive.
