#51221 RE: ORrep8 #51219

I feel strongly that the projected 20 billion annual market for robotic surgery is underestimated.
Anytime a robotic surgery fellowship is created, the demand among graduating surgery residents is overwhelming. I have personal experience with this phenomenon. The younger surgeons "get it". Thus far the only impediments to growth are that there remains a cadre of older surgeons that refuse to adopt robotics because they don't want change. By that I mean, they have their ways and are willing to accept a defined set of complications at an acceptable frequency, just so they don't have to learn the new technology. Secondarily, despite an incredible job by isrg, the technology is still not that simple to merely drop a comfortable lap technique and be immediately proficient with robotics, especially with advanced procedures. This is especially true for more established surgeons. There are more reasons but they are more subtle and take even more text to explain. However, I'm hoping that sport will impact that learning curve in a dramatic fashion.
