You are right on with every aspect of your assessment. The only thing you left out was that the original owners were awarded millions in that court settlement. We need to pray that they grow a conscience and pick up these leases again; heck why wouldn't they as the new administration is pro usa energy. They have millions of reasons to pour some of their old millions into these wells!
