My take is that most current games don't respond well to multi cores/threads. So, core speed is king, along with IPC. Intel has the edge with the former and maybe a little with the later.

The more cores the less their average speed. So, even for Intel quad core is faster than 6 or 8 for most games.

Credit due, some here gave indications of the same. Now, that doesn't make Ryzen a failure, just a more humble hero.
