"Americans are probably the most naive people on the planet when it comes to holding PM's" This lack of knowledge is epidemic IMO....Even amongst the vast majority of my friends including those that might be considered well informed in regards to finance.
Until the Fed revalues the gold on its Balance Sheet beyond $42 Oz and the international banking system accepts gold as Tier 1 capital I don't think a lot will change.
