Pretty simple: Holders of the notes can convert anytime.
AMD can buy back the notes not before December 2005.
So, shorting the amount of shares you have options to convert is zero risk for holders for the next two years. K.

Yes, the share price seems to have been constricted by the convertables to about a 7 to 7.40 range. AMD has traded well against a down NASDAQ over the last few days though, it seems to me, so I'm betting that the trough we're in is just about to be vacated.

Just have to wait to see how it turns out. If and when the fundamental problem of lack of profitability is surmounted, the share price could easily appreciate quite quickly. Any of several other factors could also set a flame to the wick.
