AMD can be diagnosed with the ever-increasing use of what is called Ocular Coherence Tomography, or OCT as it is called. There are newer machines out too that do similar things, but the basic principle is to see the layers of the retina, and be able to see the separation/edema that occurs with AMD.

I personally have not looked into the use of frozen blood for ocular use, although it seems like it could have some potential benefit. Typically, as long as the injury does not penetrate the stroma or central corneal tissue, most light burns like that can resolve without such involved therapy as the one you describe. But again, I have not looked into it yet.
