The dense second-growth plantations of pine that appear to be unthinned and un-managed are like gasoline when dry. They look to have serotinous cones so are thus from a fire-adapted ecosystem. The combination of not managing the fuels and prolonged drought is lethal to most temperate forests unless they are allowed to burn often and lightly so that when they do burn, it will be low intensity and survivable by the mature trees.

Around a dozen homes, plus farming buildings, have been destroyed by bushfires, likely caused by lightning in "dynamic" weather conditions, in southwestern Victoria.
