Thanks for your service. Like you I was in a long time ago. When I got to E-4 I made $160 a month. I also got proficiency pay for an extra $60. I was able to buy beer, have a car and have a good time.

Times have changed. Things cost more. But $1,500 for a man in boot camp to me is too much. Three hots and a cot, medical and dental and all the beating you want from the D.I., and nowhere to spend it.

What I'd like to see is pay based on the serviceman's situation. Combat or combat zone troops should make good dough. They're protecting us, our interests, and they should earn good money. The servicemen (and women) who type out requisitions at Coronado or who drive generals around should get requisite pay.

I honor our servicemen. But too many in Congress are afraid to separate the men from the boys, to set down pay rules that are based on merit, based on the situation.
