The truth has a lot to do with that. For some promoters it's not a priority, for others not even a consideration. And sometimes the truth needs some time to show itself. In this case it took longer than it should have, but now that it has we can look back and see just how honest some of those promoters were...or weren't.
It was a mistake to believe Bordynuik's promises and a mistake to publicize and support them, whether compensated to do so or not. Even the people in question should know that by now.
