It's not about the results, it's about the technique and the intent. It's semantics to an extent but it's important to protect from misunderstandings about what's going on.

A single base pair mutation can lead to complete lethality, while 1 million contiguous base pairs of the mouse genome can be cut out with no obvious effect.

We didn't mutate silkworms, we added novel DNA that wasn't there. Mutate ~ change what's already there. Mutations happen naturally at a very slow rate, or we can cause that rate to increase by intervening. We didn't change the mutation machinery to make our silk, we nicked the DNA, pasted new DNA in, and sealed up the nick. That's not mutation.
