If it's true, as you suggest, that they had mostly idle ships and incurred additional costs with large cash outflows, then they are most certainly not "debt free".
Beyond that, keep in mind, that simply selling the ships doesn't extinguish ongoing obligations to employed crew.
It's pretty obvious that they are hanging on by a thread.
