Nahh Speed gonna call out your red herring of loss of manufacturing capability being more propaganda than fact. That's a slippery slope:).

Ball screws mentioned by Fred are an example of "LOST ART" (hit me with a HASTY GENERALIZATION there). Fairly complex, hell, extremely complex in their metallurgy and screw patterns (wide rectangular with radius and without). Drives and couplings to them just as critical.

You've seen these from your plane's cabin seat if your at the window just aft of the wing. Those screw bodies extending and retracting the wing flaps. These just aren't military applications. Most military applications come to the private sector after all.

Well, I don't agree with your neoliberal analysis, but I won't get in that, except to say that I think if worker and environmental protections existed in Asia, then our labor could compete.
