$ASTI Speculators may consider the company due to its development of lightweight, thin-film photovoltaic (PV) products that will be used for an upcoming mission to Jupiter and other future missions by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). In December, the company announced a successful test of its solar cells in extreme temperatures below minus 146 degrees Celsius (minus 231 degrees Fahrenheit) and up to 190 degrees Celsius (374 degrees Fahrenheit). Components are expected to face these extreme temperatures as space vessels travel deeper into the solar system.

Though the company isn’t engaged in space travel and exploration like Virgin Galactic or Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Ascent Solar’s products are being used in a revolutionary propulsion technology called the "solar sail." According to analyst Jason Williams, the solar sail uses a process that harnesses the power and momentum of energy that is constantly emitted by the Sun.

"When these photons hit the solar sail, they are reflected back and in the process, they push the solar sail in the reverse direction,” Williams writes. “This momentum builds over time and scientists estimate that speeds of 150,000 mph could be reached in three years making it possible to reach Pluto in under five years.”
