Lot of people do it after remodels when contractors don't do good job covering.

I wouldn't say it's a scam but what I don't like is how do you know they actually did the complete duct etc.

You might see if they have cameras they can show you your ducts first to see if you think it's worth it and pay for their time doing that.

Changing filters is something that if you set a reminder on your phone is a great way to maintain your system.

Me personally unless I had a remodel done I'd just keep up on filter changes.

Gee Wade that is like asking people who never heard of optimistic bias anything. Most people don't want to hear the truth about anything, just ask Jack Nicholson.
Many young ones are on the lap of their father telling them the one in 1000 times chance a filter gets separated in the duct and can cause a fire in another 10,000 to one situation... but one youngster is smart enough to ask his Dad if anyone can deny they have a stuck filter in their duct. The father says " Son no, impossible without a look see". The youngster then tells his Dad thanks, now I know what I want to be when I grow up; a "Ductster".

I am responsible for many rental units and do not trust the word of a single chap about almost anything for which that chap may have a vested interest.
For example I sense a new chimney flue (different subject than an air duct) does not have to be inspected for at least a few years but any chimney businessman will swear it must be cleaned yearly.
I have seen a situation where normal mold in a bathroom almost always develops over time....but maintenance personal are gifted to write a report if they see any black signs of mold stains which triggers a few thousand in mold testing or then 5-8 thousand to masked Clorox sprayers who may chop out large portions of walls and ceilings, all on the referral of that maintenance person who filed an official report difficult to contest.
So I just assume if anyone asks if anything is a possible scam
only a "born yesterday" type or a Pollyanna would say ask and trust the professional.

wade,
my boss ( i was a meat cutter at the time, before i started construction, told me not to waste my money. His father and father in law were hvac contractors. ( one independent, one company man. )

He is who i use to fix my problems so i trust his judgment. he learned a lot working on the side for these guys.

just another opinion. frequent filter changes.

One hint i've read, is to during the off season (spring / fall ) before changing the filter..... turn to the fan only setting and take your leaf blower and shoot down each outlet.

I haven't done this but it seems like it might work. i would probably fabricate an attachment to fit the registers.

if anyone has a problem with this, please post, i don,t want anyone to do anything without research.

good luck and do your dd.
