I have no reason to believe that this is not the case. I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Let's see what we hear by early January on the subject.
Hey they could be telling the truth. Its happened to me before. Send in a placeholder abstract for an important scientific conference and later find that its more complicated than anticipated and had to bail at the last minute. Or get diverted by an other project for a while and can't complete the data analysis and presentation on time. This is complicated stuff. Sometimes its better to cancel than to be embarrassed at the meeting by a poor presentation.
