I travel quite a bit, so it's nice to be able to use local SIM chips rather than roam.

Actually in places like Thailand there is a HUGE second hand market for mobile phones.... there are entire sections of malls set up with vendors selling second hand phones.

Also in Thailand you don't pay for incoming calls..... you only pay for outgoing. Add to this the availability of WiFi.......
