We were on Kwajalein from 1962 - 1965. The island was about 100 -150 miles away from Bikini Atoll.
Bikini Atoll Marshallese: Pikinni, meaning coconut place) is an atoll in the Marshall Islands… Between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated by the United States at seven test sites located on the reef, inside the atoll, in the air, or underwater… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bikini_Atoll
We swam in that water and ate the fish we caught that lived in that water. I don't glow in the dark (never have) and no one in my family does either. There have been no reports of excess cases of cancer. We also saw the last atmospheric test the U.S. performed in the Pacific. It was on Johnston Is. That was 1000 miles from us and 500 miles from Hawaii. We saw a red glow that looked like the sun was rising before it faded. The Hawaiians saw every color of the rainbow. I'm not aware of excessive cancer cases on the islands.
I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a blast, but I have no great fear of fallout given a proper distance.
