#224237 RE: Tree #224233

Tree, maybe I was too smarky in my earlier post (if smarky is a word). I think ELO is an excellent band. I never loved them, but certainly listened to their songs, and enjoyed their music. Obviously they were one of the biggest bands at the time, and excellent musicians. But they had a sound, imo, that they kept on using through the years...and it was formulaic. I dont know how to describe it exactly...echo, voice modulation, steady beat....and they made tons of hits like that...they sound kind of similar to Wings through an echo chamber. I have no problem with ELO or Lynne getting in the Rock and Roll HOF. But to me, there was not alot of growth or maturation in their sound as time went on, but hey were a hit machine.

Now all that is fine. But what I really was not a fan of is Jeff Lynne as a producer for the Wilburys and Tom Petty. I think both of those bands had no need to be produced by a guy who had that one sound (however expert it might be), and put these great individual voices full of character and soul, through the Lynne formula to gain wider apeal.

best.
