Politics have undoubtedly shifted in the era of Trump, but what will become of network TV? Well, according to the new president of ABC, it’s time to make a change in programming to better suit these times.
Channing Dungey, who became the first African American president of ABC Entertainment Group in 2016, told the Content London media summit, “With our dramas, we have a lot of shows that feature very well-to-do, well-educated people, who are driving very nice cars and living in extremely nice places… but in recent history we haven’t paid enough attention to some of the true realities of what life is like for everyday Americans in our dramas.”
ABC’s dramas like Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, and Designated Survivor do not seem to fit within Dungey’s new direction, but comedies like The Middle and Speechless seem to be more in this vein.
Fox may also be embracing this example as the network has recently announced plans for a series based on the popular Facebook comedian, The Liberal Redneck.
Trae Crowder based the character on his own experiences growing up in Tennessee trailer parks, and broke out with a video critique of the North Carolina “bathroom bill” that was viewed over 21 million times on Facebook.
The single-camera sitcom will follow the character returning to his conservative Tennessee hometown with his Californian wife by his side.
