By refurbishing the aircraft it buys time to find a buyer (whole aircraft or parts), or set up a third party lease.

Do keep in mind that the source, who reported the nav system upgrade, beefier nose gear, and all of the dead wrong rosy projections has been on the company share dole program. Baltia can't sell the old bird because Connie has a lien on it.
