While the benefits of 3D printing are numerous and too important to ignore, I worry about the impact it will have on the machinists and the machine trades. These jobs will suffer from this, it may take a decade for them to really feel the effects, but this could be a paradigm shift in manufacturing.
Any contracts Boeing loses to Airbus will cost American jobs and any increases will benefit Boeing suppliers in the US. I also noticed at least half of GE's AM centers were located in the US on the map displayed. So it seems it's already happening.
I'm pro US job creation and AM is a rising tide that has several countries benefiting. I hope the US gets a healthy share of that growth.
