There are more than a few hundred people in the alt-right. One of the many unfortunate things about this election cycle is that they achieved some degree of legitimacy. Not broad appeal, but enough that people with white supremacist "tendencies" who'd never had the nerve to declare themselves in the past decided to come out of the closet. The result has been an alarming increase in hate crimes reported all over the country.
Trump should have stepped on them immediately. That is what leaders do. He should have shown some real anger; declared them "unAmerican". Instead, he pussyfooted around for quite awhile, and never really denounced them in the strong terms they deserve.
That only emboldened them, and they'll continue to be a problem; perhaps an increasing problem.
