#136243 RE: Eli's Gone #136242

Kyle Busch's weekend at Texas Motor Speedway went from bad to worse during qualifying for the AAA Texas 500 on Friday night.

Having already destroyed his primary car in practice, Busch suffered yet another setback when he qualified 24th in his backup due to a fluid leak discovered during the second round of time trials. The backup seemingly had good speed as Busch had just posted the second-fastest time in the first round. But Busch started leaking water upon starting his second round run and was forced to the garage to diagnose the problem.

Crew chief Adam Stevens said the leak simply resulted from rushing their backup car to the track in the closing minutes of practice. The backup car hit the track 58 minutes after the primary hit the Turn 4 wall and Busch only completed four practice laps before the session reached its conclusion.

"I think it is a byproduct of pounding the fence before we even completed a lap in practice," Stevens said. "In our hurry to change the motor and all the drivetrain components afterwards, apparently we didn’t get the lower radiator hose completely clamped on the water neck out of the block. That proceeded to dump all the water out of it on pit road after our first run. We’re going to start 24th and get after them from there."

Busch has the speed to contend for the win but qualifying so far down the order will provide additional challenges. Pit stall selection is based on qualifying so Busch will have the 24th best stall availiable once the race begins on Sunday.

It's not insurmountable but it could cause problems for a driver only four points above the cutoff to advance to the Sprint Cup Championship Race at Homestead Miami Speedway.
