Mr. David Walters reports
LONGFORD CORPORATION COMMENCES COMPLETION OPERATIONS OF ITS FIRST HORIZONTAL COAL BED METHANE WELL AT BARRHEAD ALBERTA
Longford Corp. has drilled and cased its first horizontal coal bed methane (CBM) well at Barrhead, Alta., and has commenced completion operations.
The well Longford HZ GNCOURTE 13-11-59-6W5 was drilled and cased to true vertical depth of 1,145 metres. A horizontal lateral was then drilled from the vertical well into the Upper Mannville coal seam to a length of 1,289 metres. The lateral well encountered 1,225 metres of coal with good-to-excellent cleating and indications of reservoir permeability throughout based on samples and drilling fluid losses to the coal. Strong indications of gas were present throughout the drilling of the horizontal wellbore.
Based on initial results, Longford has applied to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board to increase the number of permitted wells in the Barrhead area from the current one well per section. This increased downspacing program is designed to enhance water drainage and subsequent methane production.
Longford and its partners are currently completing the initial well. Early swab results appear to show good productivity and Longford will soon run a submersible pump and install temporary production facilities to confirm the productivity. Water production is expected to commence in September. Drilling operations and facility installation will commence in the fall of 2006 pending satisfactory results of the production test.
Longford has accumulated the CBM rights on 18,240 gross (4,800 net) acres of land with Mannville CBM potential in the Barrhead area. These properties are located in the vicinity of the Corbett Creek CBM project where horizontal well technology has been used to develop Mannville CBM production.
