I don't think this is / was a scam. I do think it was very poorly executed and someone was blind / narcissistic enough to ignore a simple requirement to address a loan schedule and knowing what could happen to the parents.

Also they filed for patents etc. scams don't do this.

But here we are.

Poor execution and judgement.
