OT - "You hit the nail ...."
Hear, hear. There is no way the American traveler will stand for checking his/her laptop, cellphone, camera, handbag, etc., but if carry-ons were limited to those items ... and they were physically checked in a separate line ... the lines at security check points would all but disappear. It has always amazed me how a traveler will arrive at the airport 2 hours before a flight (with most of his/her worldly possessions in a carry-on) just to save 10 minutes at the end of the flight by not having to retrieve checked baggage. To show how engrained this practice is, today I heard a TV reporter speculating how checking all the carry-ons would add too much weight to the aircraft. I suppose the carry-on would weigh more in the baggage hold than in the cabin.
Maybe this scare will result in some common sense solutions ... but I doubt it.
