Famous Indian Golfers

Even though golf came to India back in the 1820s, it took a little while for the Indian golfers to mark their international presence. After Ali Sher showed the way with his stunning Indian Open victory in 1991, Indian golfers have become a force to reckon with in the Asian golf circuit. When the Asian PGA Tour was launched in 1995, Indian golfers including Jeev Milkha Singh and Gaurav Ghei made an instant impact by putting up some of the finest performances. While Jeev's remarkable consistency earned him third position in the Asian Order of Merit, Ghei clinched the Gadgil Western Masters, one of the four majors on the Asian PGA Tour.

Both Jeev and Ghei have emerged as some of the famous Indian golf players. Jeev went on to add another feather in his cap, when he became the first Indian to qualify for the top-grade European PGA Tour. Soon, Arjun Atwal too gained entry into the EPGA and raised the bar by becoming the first Indian to win a European Tour Order of Merit event. Since 1998, Indian golfers have swept virtually every reputed tournament played in the Indian soil, a feat that underscores the depth of talent in the country.
