<They have been quite silent on their die size advantage - ever since their Opteron launched at a 42% LARGER soze than Intel's current Pentium 4>

http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030623/p4_3200-02.html says that the Northwood "A" core is 146 mm. Again, according to THG, Opteron is 193mm. That difference is 32%, not 42%.

Opteron is a server/workstation chip and should be compared to Xeon, Xeon MP and Itanium.

subzero, die size: Opteron has a much smaller die size than the Pentium 4 on 130nm. It is pretty close even when you compare 130nm Opteron with 90nm P4. (You forgot to add in the north bridge to your P4 size.)

Re: That was about the time when Jerry and Hector were thumping their chests about their smaller die size advantage over Intel- no?

And yet, even with a larger die, they pump out 2 to 3 times as many chips per Sq. Ft. of cleanroom space.

What the heck has happended to Intel's yields?
