That a startup may be a scam is one possible risk factor. So it's a YES, But that is far from the most probable risk factor. For example, incompetence is far more likely than skullduggery. Factors outside the control of management dominate both incompetence and skulduggery.

Another useful rule of thumb: if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't true. Sometimes it will be but it's rare. The very notion of a silver-bullet cure for viral infections got us all very excited. But thinking back on it, I now consider myself naive to taking such a cliam as seriously as it did.
