Government Incentives

To encourage consumers to purchase electric vehicles (EVs), the federal government and select Midwest states have put in place a number of programs to make clean driving more affordable. We have summarized some of these incentives below, and another good source of information on federal and state government rebates is available at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuel Data Center website.



Federal
Plug-In Electric Drive Vehicle Tax Credit

Benefit: $2,500 to $7,500 tax credit for purchasing an EV, depending on vehicle’s battery capacity and weight
Application: IRS website
Expiration: Phase-out will begin after each manufacturer sells 200,000 qualified cars. As of September 2015, the highest-selling EV models had reached the following cumulative sales figures (most well below the federal incentive’s expiration threshold): Nissan Leaf – 85,952; Chevy Volt – 82,621; Tesla Model S – 55,520; Ford Fusion Energi SE – 24,538; C-MAX Energi – 23,639; BMW i3 – 13,985; Fiat 500e – 12,556; and Focus Electric – 5,662.


Illinois
Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) and Alternative Fuel Rebates

Benefit: 80% rebate up to $4,000 for purchasing an electric vehicle
Application:Illinois Green Fleets
Expiration: Program currently suspended pending passage of Illinois state budget.
Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (30EVSE) Rebates / Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Rebate Program

Benefit: Covers 50% cost of installation and equipment for a Level 2 charger station, up to $3,000 per non-networked single station
Application: Electric Vehicles in Illinois
Expiration: Program currently suspended pending passage of Illinois state budget.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Registration Discount

Benefit: Annual registration fee discounted to $18 for EVs, compared to over $100 for a conventional car.
Application: CyberDrive Illinois
Expiration: None announced
Electric Vehicle (EV) Emissions Inspection

Benefit: Vehicles powered exclusively by electricity are exempt from state motor
Application: Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles
Expiration: None announced
