Let me point out a difference like that of oil and water. Following the "chicken farmer" experience, Mel Fisher was a genuine diver, owned a dive shop, ran dive tours in California. He became the real deal as a treasure hunter first with two expeditions to the Silver Bank looking for the 1641 "Concepcion". Following that he dove and worked many of the 1733 galleon shipwrecks in the Florida Keys, and then joined with Kip Wagner in the salvage of many of the 1715 Fleet shipwrecks. His long and persistent search for the 1622 Atocha was based on hands-on on the water and in the water persistence. He wasn't a in the office penny stock CEO with no previous back ground whatsoever in this field.

I believe it was 10-12 years. Mel Fisher was also a chicken farmer by trade, so he was not an experienced treasure hunter either. Which clearly shows you don't have to be an experienced treasure diver to find treasure!
