I don't understand how anyone could assume the risk in opening new short positions at this point in time. While volatility is key for literal Day Traders...and Ariad has always been a fairly high beta stock...short term traders...say 1-10 day horizons...have done well and continue to do so selling into strength and buying back on pullbacks. The risk is having to buy back in at a higher price or being on the sidelines when a BO offer comes.
