It tracks the larger block purchases over a determined amount of time. Gives a clear indication of when the bigger players are getting involved, or when they're leaving. Although a 50+ indicates bullishness, a steep ramp above 70, into 80's and 90's shows intense interest, with typically 1M+ purchase blocks to back it up.

This particular stock is running a 91 on the MFI, and hasn't deviated in weeks! To me, someone knows something is coming, and any drop in share price, or a bad chart, isn't worth bailing on at the moment. I need to find what that catalyst is.

I see the Chaikin Money Flow to be more retail, than big money. An aggregate of all money flow, regardless of block size. Used together, these are wonderful indicators of where the money is flowing.

A share price up, with a money flow down can mean get out before the rest of retail catches on. And vice versa.
