I could be wrong but I don't think big block trades reflect in the after hours numbers for institutional purchases

No, institution(s) negotiated a position with a Market Maker and they buy them directly out of MM book. The position has to be recorded as volume, but is an off market sale persay... Hence why can have a large volume recorded usually right at end of trading day or just after close and the price not move any.
