I would say yes shares get cancelled but they can't without notification

There's already been notification, in the form of the reorganization plan agreed upon. They don't have to communicate with shareholders in any way.

That's how it's happened in the cases I've followed. One day, the stock is cancelled. Sometimes in mid-session.
