Dr. O is quite emphatic that they will be affordable. Important IFs to consider: if they work, if they're scalable.

You know, if you take a paralyzed person (other than a Chris Reeve type) who really has little hope for substantial earnings, who lives in pain 24/7, who needs serious support services just to get from today to tomorrow, and will for the remainder of life, and give him the opportunity to get life, work, earnings capacity back, a lot more is possible. Even if he couldn't afford one big bill, the notion of making payments for the care is suddenly acceptable, not to mention possible.

And then there's always the possible savings to The System - which of course would be astronomical; perhaps some of those resources could be traded in for actual treatments instead of extensive pallative care. And we'd ALL still come out way ahead.
