#1617 RE: Bootz #1615

see editS below) Fred said in the cc that they can tell by registration, only by registration, if the iPod buyer was Windows or OSX.

I didn't think I'd want a new iPod, but the difference in size and design, and capacity, too, between my original 10 GB iPod and the new ones is remarkable. I am starting to covet the new ones, and I am sure I'm not alone, and that others will be upgrading, keeping their first ones as spares, or, like Kevin, giving them to worthy relatives, or like dilleet, selling them on eBay. Few of them actually go out of use, in my experience. They aren't like computers in that they can't be used to do what needs to be done any more. So, probably almost all of those over a million are being used somewhere by someone. And the more visibility they have, the more people will see them and want to buy them.

No one has mentioned the STOCK price today. What kind of AAPL thread is this? We should break 21 today, IMO. The stock has traded well over 20 during the entire trading day.

Bootz, how can Wolf tell?

I don't know, but it makes sense. Here is what Wolf was quoted as saying: Sales of Windows version iPods now exceed those of the Mac version, Wolf reveals, "with the difference continuing to grow,"

That difference will explode to the upside for WinPods, I predict, when the Music Store becomes available via iTunes for Windows.

Hopefully, the next great thing involving sale of content by Apple via the net (video anyone?), will involve a launch for both platforms at the same time.

Some, of course, view this WinPod thing with suspicion, but it is all for the good, in my opionion.

Fred avoided the Windows iPod

question by saying that they could not tell because people needed to register their iPods before they could say what OS they were using. Bull!, they also have claimed to know how many people that go to the Apple stores are windows users or first time Mac buyers.

Wmz protestations not-wistanding, everytime I go and buy even a epson ink cartridge, they know how many macs I own, it is all in the computer. They even ask you if you want to register your product right there and then. I always chose yes, it is simply more convenient.

So, evidence support that Fred is avoiding the Q because he hate to admit that iPods sell to Windows users more than to Mac users [period]. Of course the proportion is more than 20 to 1, so it makes sense.

Which begs the question, would Apple make a deal with AOL to bring videoconferencing to the PC before someone else does?

Bootz - how they know?

Via violation of Reg FD (at least the spirit of it, if not the letter of the law) by Apple. There is all kinds of information Apple refuses to give out publicly either in response to requests to Investor Relations, or during publicly transmitted conference calls, that it does pass on in private analyst meetings. If you get and read analyst reports you get the full information.

During the 4 quarters the WinPods had separate SKUs, WinPods outsold in all but the introductory quarter. But now that it's a single-SKU item, I'm not sure how they're tracking it.
