New Mac buyer anecdote:

The neighbor I mentioned last week is probably fairly representative of a certain subset of the upgrade cycle.

Remember, the original iMac is now 5 years old, and I bet a bunch of those Bondi beauties are still out there, chugging along. The replacement cycle for many of those buyers could just now be taking off, restrained in some measure by a crappy economy.

My friend is a retired educator who decided to replace her rev A, originally intending to get an eMac. She went to the Apple store and came home with the superdrive 17" iLamp, although she has no intention of doing video, as far as I can tell. Her logic? "Since I only get a new one every 5 years, I might as well get the best one so it won't be out of date too fast."

I suspect there are a lot of folks out there who buy cars every 8 years and Macs every 5 years. Not like us freaks...

p.s.--found another future switcher at work, a music buff who's drooling over the music store and just waiting to see how many of us get laid off before he gets an iPod.
