An interesting perspective.
"Real Jocks" actually wear heart monitors strapped to their chests along with other devices.

Your suggested use of smart phone monitoring is great for planned exercise periods although use of stop watches is I suspect a real jock thing as well.

The target market for fitness trackers is the "overweight fat-camp kids and housewives." and the rest of the Non Real Jock market. Believe me it is a much larger market by a factor of probably 20 or so. SO I think there is huge market potential for FitBit compared to stopwatches.

I am shocked how few steps I take when I have a solid day at the desk, get home and walk the dog once then sit in front to the TV for the evening. I now know that that isn't nearly enough steps or floors climbed (which IMHO is a key ingredient of fitness). Using the alarm functions to tell me to get up and walk around the office and climb a few flights of stairs is great. Having daily weekly and weekend challenges with my friends and their friends along with a stream of messages both encouraging me and others in the challenge also helps motivate me to get up and move. Since switching from flex to Charge HR at Xmas I have lost weight without changing my diet at all.

The new focus on business relationships will mean employers will have employee challenges and the change from a sedate life style to one where people do walk and discuss "step counts" will sweep office buildings and then nations.

If you want to take part in the biggest movement to sweep the nation it is better to have a Charge HR than a Apple Watch (and associated iPhone) as every one can see you are putting fitness first, no reason not to have both but then save money and buy a Blaze.
