In my quite extensive experience of entrepreneurs/key staff ( I suspect Dr. J is the latter) in this space, the key satisfactions are 1) making a shed load of money from exercising options and awards received throughout employment and 2) from seeing the technology developed, approved and then successfully launched.
Leaving less than halfway through the development cycle is distinctly odd, because neither of these things is likely to happen to the full extent it could.
