#33472 RE: Buzzlityr #33470

Interesting August 2015 article that supports the idea of leveraging IMSC's ETD with inline EDS. A couple excerpts that caught my attention
-"Moving forward, the EBSP will use upgrades to legacy EDSs to extend their usefulness rather than recapitalise equipment, where possible," Wilson said. "Budget constraints will limit the number of optimalisation or new inline projects that the EBSP can fund."
-"Over the next 10 to 15 years, our expectations are to do fewer buys to replace machines and instead focus on incremental system improvements,"
-He explained that the TSA's new EDS strategy represents a different business model for the equipment manufacturers. "They had been doing a lot of development activities for the next system, hoping to take it to market," he said. "What this does, at least for our purposes, is focus them on the improvements we need for the baseline machines they've already sold us. They will now roll out new capabilities on a more frequent basis, versus waiting 10 to 15 years to unveil the next great thing."
-the capabilities the vendors are adding to deployed systems and the new systems being certified and qualified are really, really expanding the capabilities that we need to make sure the threats are not making it onto our airplanes".
-TSA and vendors are looking to optimise technology capabilities "to enhance the TSA's ability to rapidly respond to emerging threats without major operational impacts".
-Read the last paragraph, "INLINE SCREENING ENHANCES EFFICIENCY"

I don't doubt for a minute that all solutions are being discussed, Buzz. Sooner or later a different course will be revealed. I just don't anticipate that a partnership or buy in/out will be part of the PR that we are anticipating this week. That's just my guess. However, I fully recognize and acknowledge that my guess could be just as wrong as anyone else's. We'll know soon.

5 or 6 EDS manufacturers. Let's examine that. There are 2 main players worldwide, L3 and Morpho. Then 2 peripheral players in Rapiscan and Smiths, neither of which has a TSA qualified machine. I guess you could get to 5 if you include Nuctec who is Chinese owned and there is zero chance a US company wants to be purchased by a Chinese owned company if they intend to deal with TSA. So this story line of 5 or 6 EDS companies approaching them seems over blown. Also, given today's technologies just how would an ETD technology be incorporated into an inline EDS system? Current technology requires opening of the bags. How would that be done in an inline system? Wouldn't it make sense to get there first, technology-wise, on a desktop system? It is many years down the road, if ever, when an ETD technology will be incorporated into an EDS inline system.
