The cost to produce transgenic bacteria and yeast might be high currently, but it will drop as the technology improves and likely eventually surpass the transgenic silkworm as the cheaper method.

That's based on your best-case scenario....
There's no present data suggesting it will be the cheaper alternative at any point in time.

Hi, Esk,
I was actually thinking of the possibilities for their gene insertion tech that might have nothing to do with producing spider silk. Their breakthrough is in their ownership of a proprietary process and being able to 'stabilize' the genes inserted, and that consistency might be applied to endless other industries, animals, plants, and uses. As far as the worms go, at 300 eggs per bug, my money is on the ability of the silk worm to geometrically reproduce, and if Kraig engineered all the progeny to be female and reproduce asexually (like the dinos in Jurassic Park) the process could really zoom ahead (also faster if you watch the movie on blueray!). And anything's possible, since there had to be 'imagination' to think of putting spider silk spinning genes into a silk worm to get to where we are in the first place. I think it was an Einstein quote where he said imagination was one of the most important things to him! Let's 'imagine' the profits here! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexual_reproduction) Good talking with you.
