Daily short volume is based on Riskless Principle. Which means the MM fills the buy with a naked short and the fills the short position with actual shares. This is accomplished in most cases within seconds. At worst the deadline is T+3. Going beyond the deadline creates a failure to deliver. There is negligible fails here if any so there is no short interest.
