There's a lot they can do, IMO. Still plenty of things on the iPhone 6s/6s Plus that are far from perfect.

I always got the impression from iPhone owners that each model
was perfect and subsequent models even more perfect than the last. :-D

Yup. Wireless charging, longer battery life, better camera, infared controller, Apple TV receiver, better speakers, SD external storage.
